Happy Spring/Fall Day 7: Clean Up Your Wi-Fi Settings

Clean Up Your Wi-Fi Settings

Do you even remember a time without Wi-Fi? It has completely transformed our lives to the point that most of us have become quite dependent on it. But do we secure our Wi-Fi? That is a very important question and if you haven’t checked your Wi-Fi security settings yet, you need to do it right now!

Why are your Wi-Fi security settings important?

Think about how often you use Wi-Fi, especially at home. If your Wi-Fi network isn’t secure, anyone could access your connected devices and steal your information. It’s important to secure your Wi-Fi to protect your accounts, devices, personal information, and even your dishwasher from being hacked. You wouldn’t trust just any free Wi-Fi (hopefully) so apply the same caution to your home network.

What should I do?

Follow these easy steps to clean up and improve your Wi-Fi security:

  • Change your router’s default password. Seriously. If you can search it on the internet, so can anyone else.
  • Update the router’s software. Yes, routers need updates too.
  • Use WPA3 encryption if it’s available.
  • Create a guest Wi-Fi network for anyone who isn’t permanently staying with you. This helps to segregate any potentially dodgy devices from your secure network – you don’t know if you’re friends really do their updates.
  • Check for any unknown or unfamiliar devices connected to your Wi-Fi and remove them immediately.

What if I forgot my Wi-Fi admin password?

This one can be rough, but you’ll probably have to reset the router completely and start again. From the beginning. With the default admin username and password. Just remember to change it as part of the set up and store it in a password manager.

Protect your Wi-Fi

Once you have your Wi-Fi security up to scratch, you’ll be able to continue browsing and scrolling with ease. Check the connected devices regularly and remove any that don’t require access to your network – you’re another step closer to being safe online. Be secure!
