Happy Spring/Fall Day 6: Refresh Your Security Settings

Refresh Your Security Settings

Have you ever wondered why the privacy and security settings for your accounts are never set to the strictest options by default? Well, that isn’t changing anytime soon so we need to do it ourselves. Unless you’re intentionally trying to share ALL your info, let’s look at a few easy ways we can tighten up those settings ASAP.

Why is increasing your privacy and security settings important?

Unless your intention is for everyone to have access to all your information including email address, social posts, pics, etc. you will probably want to tighten those settings. Privacy settings limit the personal information you share, while security settings provide more protection for your account. A little if both goes a long way in keeping your info safe online.

What should I do?

Follow these easy steps to refresh your privacy and security settings:

  • For each of your accounts, go to the security settings and enable the security alerts or notifications. This will send a notification if any suspicious activity is detected on your account.
  • Enable MFA wherever possible as it adds another hurdle for anyone trying to access your account.
  • Check each of your social media accounts to see who can view your posts and limit it to only your friends.
  • Review the app permissions to ensure that it only has access to what it needs – not everything needs to know your precise location.
  • Check your browser and turn off tracking and cookies where possible.

What if I don’t know which security setting to choose?

Start with the settings listed above. You can always review and update as you go along.

What if I don’t know which privacy setting to choose?

When it comes to privacy, start with the strictest setting and reduce it as you become more comfortable. The less you share initially, the less privacy concerns you’ll have going forward.

What if I want everyone to see all my info?

To each his own. Have fun!
