There has been a huge surge in headlines relating to Google recommending users change their passwords recently. The reason for this warning is due to the news of 16 billion passwords being exposed online in what is considered a massive breach. Yes, you read that correctly – 16 BILLION!

According to Bleeping Computer, this could likely be a compilation of previous hacks. However, it’s always better to be safe, so let’s look at how you can change your password.

How to change your Google password

Follow these steps to reset your password:

  • Visit your Google Account page
  • Go to Security > Password

Don’t just change your password

While you are logged on and updating your info, why not enable 2-step verification too? It’s really easy:

  • In Security, click 2-Step Verification
  • Click Turn on 2-Step Verification
  • You’ll get a message once it’s turned on – it’s that easy.

You can make it even easier by setting up the authenticator app:

  • In Security, click Add authenticator app
  • Click Set up authenticator
  • Open the authenticator app on your phone
  • Scan the QR code
  • Click Next
  • Enter the QR code
  • Click Verify
  • And you’re done!

Check for security alerts while you’re there

Before you log out, look at the security tips in Security Checkup by clicking Review security tips at the top of the Security page. This section will give you more information on how you can improve the security of your account. Check each one of the sections to ensure that there isn’t any suspicious activity.

You can also look at the devices logging on to your account, the apps and services connected to your account, and the sign-in activity.

How to check if your account was involved in a breach

Here are two methods you can use to check if your account was involved in a data breach:

1. Check Google’s Password Checkup

  • Go to Settings > Autofill & Passwords > Password Manager > Checkup.
  • Google will alert you if any of your saved logins have been exposed.

2. Use the FREE Have I Been Pwned

  • Type in your email address and hit Enter.
  • If the screen flashes red, your email is part of a breach. It will also list the data breaches where your account was discovered.
  • If it’s green, you’re good to go.

This may be a pain now, but it can save you from unnecessary stress later. Change your password, consider using a password manager, and keep your accounts safe online. Be secure!
