We are so busy these days and most of us find it challenging to learn something new and exciting in a short period. Over the past few weeks, we have seen an astounding increase in cyber-attacks. We all know that cyber security is important, but we just don’t have the time to focus on it. So, in this article, we’ve explained what cyber security is in less than one minute!
What is cyber security?
Cybersecurity is the practice of keeping computers, laptops, smart phones, TVs, servers, networks, Wi-Fi, air fryers, accounts, emails, systems, and PEOPLE safe online. It uses security measures like passwords, firewalls, 2FA, MFA, VPNs, IDS, IPS, SOC, SIEM, and many other security tools to protect you from hackers.
How do cyber-attacks happen?
Hackers are the bad guys who try to get access to your accounts, systems or networks so that they can steal identities, data, money, and secrets. They do this by performing malicious attacks which include phishing, vishing, smishing, malware, ransomware, spyware, DDoS, viruses, man-in-the-middle, AI-based attacks, and more.
The most common cyber-attack is phishing because it’s easy to pull off, especially with the introduction of AI, and people love clicking links!
How do you protect yourself online?
Firstly, there are different security teams who are trying to prevent these attacks through monitoring, hardening, and hunting, and sometimes that includes cybersecurity awareness training. The awareness training is designed to help you identify cyber risks and avoid becoming the next victim. Remember, you can’t win the lottery if you didn’t enter!
Secondly, there are things we can do to help keep ourselves safe online. Additional cyber security tips you can follow are:
- Have a strong password
- Use MFA or 2FA
- Use a VPN
- Do your updates (always)
- Don’t overshare online
- And back up everything!
Cybersecurity is for everyone because we all play a role in keeping the online stuff safe!
