If you’ve been following the news lately, it seems like every business is introducing Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the workplace. AI is no longer a distant concept. It’s here, reshaping industries and workflows. While AI does offer numerous benefits, its rapid integration into organizations has sparked concerns about job security. So, let’s take a moment to consider the realities of AI’s impact on employment and how we can potentially adapt to the new AI job requirement.

The rise of AI jobs in the workplace

AI technologies are increasingly being introduced within various companies to enhance efficiency and reduce operational costs. Many companies are implementing AI to replace basic manual functions. For example, companies are investing in replacing basic admin functions, customer service, and IT helpdesk support roles. If the job role does not require any specialized skill, it could very well be next for an AI related discussion.

Some companies, such as Duolingo and Shopify are implementing AI-first strategies, where employees are expected use AI as part of their key responsibilities. If we look a bit closer to home, Mediclinic appears to be following the trend of utilizing AI for administrative positions. There are so many companies that are already expecting employees to start using AI as part of their daily functions, even when they may not fully understand how to use it correctly. This change emphasizes the need to be proficient in AI as part of a required skill for any job going forward.

Understanding the AI job concerns

Let’s cut to the chase. People are concerned that AI might replace their jobs. And by people, I mean us. AI is advancing at an unforeseen rate and there are no signs of it slowing down.

If AI does make human positions obsolete, then that could lead to widespread unemployment. Unfortunately, there are so many people who are already unemployed right now and that will just get worse. And not everyone may be in a position to learn how to use AI effectively which then increases the stress of possibly being replaced.

This concern raises questions about the future role of us human employees in an AI-driven economy. A truly valid concern that needs to be addressed with urgency.

AI for collaboration or replacement?

Despite these concerns, many experts advocate for viewing AI as a tool that complements human labor rather than replacing it. Companies like Lattice are developing AI agents designed to assist employees by handling routine tasks. This will allow them to focus on more strategic and creative aspects of their roles.

This collaborative approach suggests that while AI will transform job functions, it doesn’t necessarily eliminate the need for, or replace, human workers. Instead, it emphasizes the importance of learning how to leverage AI in the workplace.

Preparing for our future with AI

The most important step we can take right now is to understand how we can use AI to help us prepare for our future. Here are three steps to get started:

  • Use AI. Start using AI today! Begin with simple prompts just to understand how AI responds. This will help you build your skillset to begin working on AI agents in the future.

What’s next?

We don’t have all the answers yet, but we know that the adoption of AI in the workplace is an ongoing process that presents both challenges and opportunities. We need to figure out how we will adapt to these changes and put ourselves in a position where we are leveraging AI instead of being replaced by it.
